August Landmesser was a member of the Nazi Party, working his way up through the ranks, when he met and fell in love with a Jewish woman. Swiftly expelled from the Nazi Party, he and his beloved, Irma, were denied the right to legally marry.

Despite this, their love continued and they even had a child. Sadly, their story didn't end happily. They both ended up in concentration camps. Irma, because she was a Jew, and August, because he refused to abandon his wife and their child.

Irma was murdered in the camp, and August survived only to become missing in action after he was drafted into war in 1944.

This iconic photo was taken during a rally that featured Hitler's christening of a new German navy vessel. Landmesser refused to salute the man who symbolized all that was evil, and his courageous act of defiance and this photo have since stood out as a symbol of courage for generations.
